Here are the books I’ve been slaving over the past few months! I started studying mid-September and finished reading all six by January 3rd. I’m currently in a 2-4 week break (hope it won’t extend haha).

This is seriously, one if not the greatest challenge I’ve ever faced in my life. It’s easy if your studying full time but combine it with work and it’s a dangerous cocktail. You think it’s easy to study when you get home from work but I mostly just find myself too tired to absorb the information effectively. I’ve tried waking up early but the bed is just too tempting! I have spent and will spend many more weekends at Coffee Bean and I think I will need a back transplant pretty soon!

I’vd done good progress so far and I think this is doable despite what I’ve heard. A few more months of extra hard work and I know it will pay off.

Sometimes in life you gotta put the sacrifice in. Short term pain, long term gain as I say.

I’m back! That’s me in the office! I’ve been so busy the past few months just learning the ropes of my trade and studying for the hellish CFA level 2 exam. It’s been crazy!

I’ll be using this blog from now on mostly for random posts from my phone. I just want a creative outlet and somewhere to store random thoughts!

Action Time

One starry night, Sasha and I were in Greenbelt together with some friends for a birthday treat in Yakimix. That night was also the fateful night that I would get the results to my CFA Level 1 exam that I worked five months for. The CFA email said I would get the results 9 am ET in the US so I thought I’d get it 9 pm Philippine time.

9:00 pm. Sasha and I slid out of the restaurant to hunt for internet. We tried to steal from various restaurants nearby but to no avail. We ended up in Fuzion and one order of Mango Berry juice. Sasha stole her iPad back from my eager hands and entered the password to my email. Disappointment and scratching of heads ensued as no email came.

It turns out that results would come out one hour later. My heart palpitations took a time out first as we headed to grab some coffee.

10:00 pm. Sasha and I thought that we could just check it at home but we were too excited to wait. We transferred to Seattle’s Best and bought product worth at least Php 250 to be able to use the internet.

We opened my email and there it was. We clicked the message open and at first I thought I forgot how to read but Sasha was hugging me the next second! I passed. Happiness really did not flow it was more of relief that I didn’t waste 500 hours of studying for a fail in the end. Thanks to my family, Sasha and everyone who tolerated my crabbiness the past 5 months!

And this is where that squiggly chart up top comes in. I bathed in theory for five months and after the test I just wanted some action. That chart is the PSI. It shows the average performance of representative stocks in the Philippine Stock Exchange. To make it short, it represents the performance of the whole market and is generally a barometer of economic performance and prospects.

I recently just started stock investing last January. Unfortunately, I was greeted by a down month represented by the falling wedge shape by the end of the chart. I used to not care about the news but when money is at stake every bit of news is interesting. On a high note, the long term trend is still good so let’s just see what happens when all the dust clears about the uncertainties present today. I.E. the mayhem in Egypt. Last I heard it spread to other regions in the middle east. I just hope for the best.

I took a 6-hour 240 item CFA Level 1 mock exam a while ago and the results were quite good, I think, with the benchmark that the average passing score is about 70%. If you remove my two weakest areas (Ethics and Financial Statement Analysis) I would get an average of 88%. On the flip side, I was lowest in the weightiest parts of the exam! I’m glad this was only a mock exam.
There’s not much I can do about Ethics because its really hard no matter how you know the material! Right and wrong doesn’t seem so simple anymore if you read the problems and situations they throw at you. I was kinda disappointed with this part because I was averaging more than 80% in the other tests I took. Let’s see how I do in this part in the other mock exam I signed up for.
As for Financial Analysis, some of the questions were just too specific and I couldn’t dig up the details in my brain. I was confident that I’d get a good score in this part after all the review I did but I was wrong. FA was the thickest book I read (about 600 pages) and the detail it gets to is just mind blowing at times. At least I now know which parts of that book to really drill through in the remaining days I have until the exam.
The other parts were just breezy because its really clear which parts are the important ones that you have to pay attention to in reviewing the material.
I have two days to review my mistakes in the mock exam and the other stuff I answered before the next mock exam in Ateneo Professional Schools on Saturday.

I Now Have a White Board in my Room

I just resigned from work about a week ago mainly because I feel that I need more time to study for the upcoming CFA exams and I just didn’t feel at home with the tasks assigned to me.

Work since then has been replaced with countless hours of mind numbing studying. I finished reading all the books before October and this month has been spent reviewing every single chapter and understanding the parts that I had a hard time with initially.

I now have no income again but hopefully this will not be for long, as I have found something to do part-time. I need to earn after all to buy gifts for me and my loved ones this coming Christmas (not to mention that HD tv that I have been eying for a long time).

In this photo taken by Sasha I am making the white board I used very useful. It really helps in clarifying concepts and seeing the connections of everything I study.

Signing up for more Studying

I haven’t posted anything on my cyber nook for ages and it isn’t for no good reason. Last July 30, 2010 at 11:16:10, I officially registered to be a candidate in the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) program and it has been making me busy like clockwork.

A brief background on this. It’s a graduate level self-study program. There are three levels to undertake and several years of related work experience before I can earn the CFA charter (More information here).

The big Level I test is on December 5 and those books above are what I have to study. It’s not as hard as it looks since I took a minor in Finance (and I’m glad I did). I basically am familiar about most of the topics. The big problem, however, is trying to cram a ginormous amount of information in my head before the exam date when I have a 9-hour wedge in my day called WORK.

That’s the primary reason why my online presence has been tip toeing near zero lately. I try to wake up at 9 am but I mostly get started studying at 10 am. I study until 12 pm get ready, then leave to get Sasha to work, then head to Fort for my 3 pm to 12 am shift. At work, I eat 10 minute lunches to study. I try to finish work asap to also make for more time to study.

It’s crazy. And while it makes 8-hour of sleep seem scarce because of the level of energy I have to bring into the day, it makes me fulfilled to once again be learning new (and old) things that really stimulate my mind. Even if I decimated my savings and would be savings for this. I know I’ve made the right decision. It’s an investment that I know will pay off.

I feel like a man on a mission, relentless in the pursuit of his goals. Thanks to my parents for letting me pay off half the fee only for this year and to Sasha for being the ever supportive girlfriend.

If anyone is interested I’m now halfway into the Economics book. Four months left to study!
